Waste Tire ProgramWhat can you do with old tires? This is a question asked all over the world. We generate a tremendous number of waste tires in Northwest Arkansas. Last year, we dispose of over 300,000 passenger tires and 50,000 large truck (semi) tires. The waste tire program is funded through a grant from the State of Arkansas using fees paid when you buy new tires. We have seven collection centers in the District where citizens and tire dealers bring their scrap tires for proper disposal. Currently, our passenger tires are taken to a crumb rubber facility in Oklahoma where they are ground up and used as playground material. Truck tires are taken to a cement kiln in Tulsa and used as fuel. And large tires are sent to Little Rock where they are ground up for use in septic fields or playground material. How should I get rid of my old tires? When you go to your local tire dealer, he charges you a $2.00/tire disposal fee. This money is used to fund the waste tire program in this and other districts. Your dealer is obligated to take as many scrap tires from you as he charges fees. So if you buy three tires and pay $6 in disposal fees, your dealer must take three scrap tires from you at no additional charge. The dealer then brings them to our collection center. Citizens can also bring four passenger tires per year to the collection centers at no charge. More than four passenger tires, large truck (semi) tires, off-road tires and tires on rims have a charge for their disposal.
