Special WastesIn addition to collecting and processing recyclables and garbage, there are other "special wastes" that need handling outside the normal system. Four items that the District has programs to address are household hazardous wastes, electronics, waste tires and bulky wastes. Household hazardous wastes (HHW) are common everyday items routinely found in every household. These products exhibit hazardous characteristics which require them to be handled and disposed of in a special manner. Some common items of HHW include: household cleaners; automotive fluids; insecticides and herbicides; paints, stains, and solvents; household batteries; and fluorescent light bulbs. The District operates a number of HHW collection centers where residents can bring HHW for recycling and disposal at no charge. In addition, good used items are available to take at no charge. Do your part to improve the economy and the environment... have your old electronic equipment recycled! Bring it to one of our three collection centers and we'll recycle it for a small fee. Click above for more information. Waste tires are a chronic problem in Northwest Arkansas. The State of Arkansas has imposed a fee on every new tire purchased in the State. When you go to your local dealer and pay this fee, the dealer is obligated to take an equal number of used tires for disposal at no charge (if you buy two tires, the dealer takes two tires at no charge). Dealers then bring the used tires to collection centers where we send them for disposal. Our tires currently are being sent to cement kilns in Oklahoma where they are used to provide fuel for the manufacture of cement. Some tires also go to a crumb rubber facility in Oklahoma where they are ground up and used for mulch, playground material or manufacture into other rubber products. Citizens can also bring up to four passenger tires (not on rims) to collection centers at no charge. To find out where to take your tires, click on the link above. Bulky items are things such as furniture and appliances. These items are generally too big for your regular trash collector to handle. The District has a program to collect these items for a small fee. Click on the link above for additional information. |
