The District operates a household hazardous waste (HHW) management program that focuses on receiving materials from citizens to be recycled or disposed of safely. Household hazardous wastes (HHW) are common everyday items routinely found in every household. These products exhibit hazardous characteristics which require them to be handled and disposed of in a special manner. Some common items of HHW include: household cleaners; automotive fluids; insecticides and herbicides; and household batteries. These items will be received at one of the District HHW collection centers where residents at no charge. Other HHW items that can be brought in at a minimal cost are paints, stains, and solvents; and fluorescent light bulbs. Latex paint is $1 per can, oil based paints and stains are $1 per can and $1 per pound. Fluorescent light bulbs contain mercury and will be properly disposed of for $1 each. Everyone has household hazardous wastes (HHW) in their home. You will usually find them under the sink or in the garage. HHW is common household items that have some hazardous characteristic. Examples include drain openers, cleaners, paints, pesticides, auto fluids, batteries, sharps, and fluorescent bulbs.

PublicationsWe have two brochures concerning household hazardous wastes. Click on the links to get a copy in Adobe Acrobat (pdf) format. Collection CentersThere are four HHW collection centers in the District. Residents of Madison and Washington Counties can bring HHW into the centers for proper management at no charge. In addition, residents can "shop" for usable items that others no longer want. Some examples of items placed on the reuse shelves include partially-used containers of pesticides, paint, auto wax and household cleaners. An extensive HHW reuse store is located at Haz-MERT's office in Rogers. You can find them at 2633 Laurel Circle, Rogers, (479) 621-9707.
