Household Hazardous Wastes

Everyone has household hazardous wastes (HHW) in their home.  You will usually find them under the sink or in the garage.  HHW is common household items that have some hazardous characteristic.  Examples include drain openers, cleaners, paints, pesticides, auto fluids, batteries, sharps, and fluorescent bulbs.

Benefits of Proper Management of HHW

bulletChildhood Poisonings - the majority of childhood poisonings occur in the home with HHW.   So protect your children.  Keep HHW out of the reach of children and bring in items you no longer want or need to a HHW collection center.  Someone else might be able to use them.
bulletProtect Trash Collectors - Trash collectors and landfill personnel are injured and sometimes killed every year when people throw HHW into their regular garbage.   A lot of these materials generate heat or toxic fumes when they mix with each other.  You don't want to be the one responsible for buying a new trash truck or paying hospital and legal bills.  Bring it in to us.  We'll make sure it gets taken care of properly.
bulletFire Safety - Firefighters have one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.   Don't make it worse by keeping items that release toxic fumes in your house.   In case of a fire, HHW products can generate deadly smoke that can keep you from getting out and injuring firefighters trying to protect your home.
bulletProtect Your Water - You Dump It, You Drink It.  It's as simple as that.   Don't pour HHW onto the ground, in creeks or into the sewer system.
bulletReduce Taxes - WHAT???!!!  No matter how careful your city, county or local hauler is, if they take your trash to some place and it becomes a toxic waste site, your city and county are responsible for cleaning it up.  Don't put highly toxic materials into your trash.  Deliver them to a HHW collection center where they will be properly disposed.

Collection Centers

There are four HHW collection centers in the District.  Residents of Madison and Washington Counties can bring HHW into the centers for proper management at no charge.  In addition, residents can "shop" for usable items that others no longer want.  Some examples of items placed on the reuse shelves include partially-used containers of pesticides, paint, auto wax and household cleaners.  An extensive HHW reuse store is located at Haz-MERT's office in Rogers.  You can find them at 2633 Laurel Circle, Rogers, (479) 621-9707.
