Electronics Recycling Comes to Northwest ArkansasYou can now bring in your old computers, printers, TVs, VCRs and cell phones to any one of our Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection centers for recycling. There is a small charge (usually 5 dollars) that must be collected to cover the labor costs associated with the recycling process. Cell phones are free. Contact the individual collection centers for specific charges. Click here for a list of the collection centers. What happens to the items? The items are taken to ACCESS Computer Products Inc. Computers are checked to see if they are in good working order. If they are, all data is erased and the computers are sold to schools and others at a discount. Equipment that is no longer usable is dismantled. Monitors are converted into television sets and sold to disadvantaged persons. Metals are recovered for recycling. The lead-filled glass is removed and sent for processing where the lead is removed from the glass and the glass recycled. The lead is melted and sold back to manufacturers. The plastic parts are ground up and then either recycled into new products or burned for fuel in a power plant in Iowa. Project Green-FedThis is a program that allows Arkansas residents to send unwanted computer equipment and a few other electronics to Unicor for recycling at no cost to the resident. Please go to http://www.unicor.gov/recycling/greenfed/ for more information. What about microwave ovens? All our HHW Collection Centers will accept microwaves. Call for hours and fees. |
